Bob was born on Feb. 18, 1935, in Hardy, Iowa, son of Elwood and Alice (Luchsinger) Rummens. He married Nancy Seger on May 26, 1956, in Ames, Iowa. Bob and Nancy were inseparable. As an ROTC student at Iowa State, he raised money for Nancy’s wedding ring by selling sandwiches to sororities in the evenings. The two started their family while Bob served nine years in the Army, moving all over the country. After the service, they farmed crops and dairy near Corwith, Iowa and then moved to Mansfield to continue farming; later moving to Rogersville. After semi-retiring (what farmer truly retires?), they had the opportunity to travel the world, particularly cherishing a trip to Australia and New Zealand. Bob was a hard-working man; to the end, ready to get home to milk the cows. He was at once mischievous, light-hearted, and curmudgeonly, aiming to make Nancy smile most of all. He took great pride and joy in teasing and loving his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Together, Bob and Nancy created the home you never wanted to leave. Survivors include his children, Stephen (Cheri) Rummens, of Mansfield; Annelise Day, of Independence; Michele (Cory) Westhoff, of Petersburg, Iowa; and daughter-in-law, Lucy McLennan (J.R. Clark), of Hurley, Wisc.; “extra” children, Steve (Twila) Haverly, of Ames, Iowa, and Carole Hughes, of St. Louis; grandchildren, Sarah Rummens, Jess (Marina Laczkowski) Rummens, Tyler (Jennifer) Rummens, Lauren (Matt) Barnett, Nathan (Linzy) Rummens, Kyle (Sophie) Rummens, Amanda (Todd) Miller, Caitlin (Mark) Stevens, Erin Day, Seth (Kelly) Day, Tia (Marco) Izzia, Spencer Westhoff, Elise (Christopher Parma) Westhoff, Ethan (Galilea) Westhoff, Anya Westhoff and Gabrielle Westhoff; 23 great grandchildren; in-laws, Donna Rummen,s of Moorhead, Minn.; David MacLean, of Annandale, Minn.; J. Richard (Marvel) Seger, of Mission, Texas; Mary (Charles “Chuck”) Reckard, of Arnolds Park, Iowa; and Susan Behr, of Mason City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Nancy; parents; sons, Calvin, Alan and Noel Rummens; and sons-in-law, Mike Day and Jim McLennan; siblings, Elaine Pizner, Burl Rummens and Leone MacLean; in-laws, JoAnne (Jon) Peterson and Charles “Chuck” Behr. The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff at Riverbend AL “Moments” Memory Care in Cascade and Hospice of Dubuque for their compassionate care.
