Sharon Miller, a retired member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), has frequently utilized the driving range at Wedgewood Golf Course while visiting her sister, Janice Prescott, of Mansfield.
Miller, who is 84 and has been unable to play the course due to a recent auto accident, has recently moved from Green Valley, Ariz., with her focus on returning to her hometown of Marshall, Mich., to be near family.
Before departing Arizona, Miller played twice a week and hit range balls for more than two hours at a time.
Her storied professional golfing career began back in 1966 and saw her play in 75% of the U.S. states through 1980.
Miller picked up three professional wins, with one victory coming in a playoff against Judy Rankin in the Corpus Christi Civitan Open.
Rankin went on to become the first ever LPGA golfer inducted into the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame back in 2000.
After Miller’s win in 1973, she won the LPGA Borden Classic in 1974.
She also made the cut in 10 of her 11 appearances in the U.S. Women’s Open, where she placed fifth two different times.
After leaving the tour back in 1981, Miller became an LPGA Master Teaching Professional.
She would go on to eventually be named the Golf Digest Teacher of the Year in Colorado in 2000 before being inducted the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in 2008.
The LPGA golfer with local ties was also the instruction editor-in-chief for the Golf for Women magazine.
Miller is also known as one of three founding professionals at the famous Bird Golf Academy.
In her early years, Miller was a state golf champion in 1962 and 1963.
She was later inducted into the Western Michigan University’s Hall of Fame in five different sports (golf, tennis, basketball, volleyball and field hockey).
During her visit to Wedgewood Country Club, Miller told course volunteers that she’s missed her lady golfer groups back in Arizona.
