Crazy scene unfolds in Grovespring after incident involving a hatchet

Jason Bailey
A Grovespring man received two first degree assault charges after a crazy scene unfolded around midnight on Tuesday, June 4.
According to a probable cause statement, a Wright County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a call while being assisted by an officer from police departments in both Mansfield and Hartville along Highway M in Grovespring noting that multiple individuals were involved in a fight. Upon arrival, one black adult victim was reportedly covered in blood.
The victim was found sitting in a Ford pick-up on the property and appeared lifeless while being covered in blood. It was reported this victim had a flap of skin 4”-5” across on the back left side of his head.
Another victim was soon discovered across the street reportedly running around the yard screaming for help. This victim was a pregnant female who was bleeding heavily from her hands with both her pinky and index finger lacerated to the bone. In the statement, the deputy said it “appeared the pinky finger was severed to the point that it was barely held on.”
Meanwhile, a Jason Bailey, of Grovespring, was found in the back of a GMC Yukon with his face black and blue, both eyes were swollen shut, he was reportedly gurgling blood and slurring his words.
A deputy detected a strong odor of intoxicants coming from Bailey, who was belligerent at the scene.
Bailey did have a reported lady friend at the scene.
The first female victim’s account noted that she and the male victim had offered Bailey a ride when Bailey declined the ride in a reportedly hostile manner.
While they returned to their residence, Bailey, who lives nearby, returned to his own residence. It was noted that Bailey and the male victim had previously worked together at a job and had a falling out.
He went to their residence with a hatchet in his hand. He then reportedly attacked the male victim while saying a vulgar and racially charged phrase to the victim.
Bailey struck the male victim in the back of the head, causing him to fall backward behind the vehicle’s open door. The female then went over to stop Bailey’s attack, which led to her hands being injured.
Bailey then struck the female victim in the shoulder and on the back while reportedly saying, “All you n****s are gonna die.”
The male victim was able to then get the hatchet away from Bailey before punching and choking the suspect before the victim got him to stop.
Bailey then went across the street and the victims were able to dial 9-1-1.
At that time, the victims noted that Bailey came onto their property in spite of a posted “No Trespassing” sign.
When Bailey could talk, he reportedly said he heard that the male victim was going to beat up the female victim and this was when he was assaulted.
A Wright County sergeant though reported that it appeared Bailey’s story would change and was not consistent.
The same sergeant said the female victim did feel Bailey’s actions were racially motivated.
At 2:05 p.m., Bailey was arrested without incident. He was previously convicted for first degree assault and second degree violence in 2012 and had another first degree assault charge in 2022. Bailey and the two victims last Tuesday went to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.
