Panthers’ tennis gets second in Salem Tournament

Mountain Grove’s tennis team had an outstanding week the included a runner-up performance in a tournament while also picking up a pair of match victories.
In the Salem Tournament, the Panthers earned a second place team finish after three second place finishes and one individual title.
Cooper Mitchel won the Salem Tournament championship for No. 2 singles.
Erecka Penner placed second in No. 1 singles while both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams placed second.
The No. 1 squad features Wyatt Fry and Trygg DeVries while Hunter Pope and Emma Schrock are the No. 2 doubles team.
“Proud of this team and all their hard work,” said Mountain Grove head tennis coach Kim Darrah.
Early in the week, the Panthers took on South Central Association (SCA) Conference foe Houston and cruised to an 8-1 victory.
In singles action, Mitchell (8-0), Fry (8-6), DeVries (8-1), Pope (8-0) and Schrock (8-2) all won their matches. Penner fell in the No. 1 singles match-up, 8-1.
As for doubles, Penner and DeVries won, 8-5; Mitchell and Fry won 8-1; while Pope and Schrock won 8-2.
Mountain Grove also picked up a 7-2 victory over Licking last week.
Penner won her No. 1 single match, 8-4. Mitchell (8-1), Fry (8-2), DeVries (8-1) and Schrock (8-2) also had victories. Pope lost his match, 8-4.
In doubles, Penner and DeVries won 8-1 while Mitchell and Fry won 8-0. Pope and Schrock fell in No. 3 doubles, 8-5.
