Mountain Grove baseball nearly knocks off West Plains
Mountain Grove senior Josiah Schott returns from an ACL injury and gets an RBI single in his first varsity at-bat this season against Cabool.
Though currently the Mountain Grove Panthers’ baseball team has a record four games under .500, they did get some encouragement last week when they lost a 2-1 class to West Plains.
This is because those same Zizzers defeated district rival Logan-Rogersville one week earlier, 9-4.
The Panthers led the Zizzers, 1-0, through five innings before the Zizzers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game.
Eli Golden had two hits and one RBI while Brayden Haughey scored the lone run.
Taylor Garner tossed four and a third scoreless and no-hit innings and struck out three with four walks.
Skip Thompson tossed one inning and gave up two earned runs on two hits with one strikeout.
Briar Parsons tossed two-thirds of an inning for the Panthers and gave up no runs or hits with one strikeout.
Two days later, the Panthers fell to Willow Springs, 4-2, as Mountain Grove scored two runs in their final at-bat, but the rally was too late in the loss to the Bears.
Trace Harker had one RBI while Destin Unger and Thompson both scored one run.
Harker tossed four innings from the mound and gave up one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and six walks.
Parsons tossed two innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Haughey tossed a scoreless inning and struck out one.
Mountain Grove’s lone win of the week came when they traveled to Cabool and left with a 21-0 victory.
Haughey tossed four scoreless innings and gave up one hit with seven strikeouts.
Parsons tossed a scoreless inning and allowed one hit with one strikeout.
(Gamechanger statistics for the Cabool game were incorrect. Notably, seniors Josiah Schott and Rusty Deaton did get an RBI in the win.)
