Hartville Eagles win 51st Liberty Invitational title

The Hartville Eagles’ basketball team won their second tournament championship this season after picking up three wins and winning the 51st Liberty Invitational recently.
A six-win Bakersfield program awaited Hartville in the championship game and the Lions were a handful.
Though Hartville’s offense scored 11 points or less in all four quarters, they did just enough to pick up a 42-37 victory in the title game.
In the first quarter, Mason Cogdill hit a 3-pointer and scored six of his team’s nine points.
It was Payton Cogdill’s turn in the second quarter as he scored eight points. Jordan O’Quinn made a big 3-pointer to help the Eagles take a three-point lead at halftime.
O’Quinn added a second 3-pointer in the third quarter while Mason Cogdill scored five points to push the lead to seven points.
In the fourth quarter, Hartville made 7-of-10 free throws and held on for the five point victory.
All-Tournament selection Mason Cogdill scored 13 points; Jackson Ward added 10; Payton Cogdill, who was also on the All-Tournament team, had nine points; O’Quinn had six; and Boone Garrison scored four points.
In the semifinals, the Eagles took on a solid Eminence team and picked up a 38-31 victory.
The Eagles’ defense held Eminence to just two points in the second quarter before doing just enough in the second half to pull away with the win.
Payton Cogdill scored seven points in the opening frame for an early 10-5 advantage.
Gus Sinning scored five points in the second quarter to pace Hartville to an 18-point halftime edge.
Hartville made five 3-pointers in the first half and added one more from Ward in the third quarter.
Payton Cogdill ended the game with nine points; Sinning scored eight; Garrison had seven; Ward had six points; both Mason Cogdill and O’Quinn had three points; while Harmon Johns scored two points.
In round one, Hartville cruised past Neelyville, 58-31.
Neelyville’s offense scored just nine total points in the first half as Hartville was up 24-9 at the break.
Payton Cogdill scored a team-high 16 points in the Eagles’ win.
Mason Cogdill added 13 points; Sinning had 10; Johns scored seven points; Garrison had five points; O’Quinn had three points; while both Truett Coryell and Ward had two points.
