Vola Sue Nelson

Vola Sue Nelson, daughter of the late Hugh Clifton and Agnes Irene (Reed) Rogers, was born on the family farm in Mountain Grove, and departed this life Jan. 29, 2022, at her home in Mountain Grove. She was 87 years, 4 months and 23 days. Vola graduated high school and was united in marriage to Earl Brantley Nelson on Dec. 26, 1952. Three children were born to this union. Vola was a hard worker and took great care and pride in everything she did in life. Some of her jobs included working at Brown Shoe Company, home health care, Carps Department Store, three different local cafes, first grade teacher’s aide and a Boy Scout leader. Being on the farm, she loved milking cows and feeding calves. She liked to tell about the one year she bottle fed one hundred calves. Vola loved to sew and cross stitch. She was proud to have sewn her granddaughter, Lyndsey’s, prom dresses and wedding dress. Her greatest love in life was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, Vola was preceded in death by one sister, Judy May Smith.Vola is survived by her husband of 69 years, Earl Nelson; two sons, Richard Nelson and wife, Shannon, and Roger Nelson and wife, Debbie; one daughter, Rhonda Watson and husband, Terry; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Hugh Roy Rogers; and a host of other relatives and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services for Vola Sue Nelson were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022, in the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home of Mountain Grove with the Rev. Frank McCune officiating. Special songs were “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder,” “I Can Only Imagine” and “It Is Well With My Soul.” Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery of Mountain Grove under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home.
