Steven Wayne Cheyney, known as Steve, was born on July 13, 1958, in Lynwood, Calif., to Eugene and Dana (Lane) Cheyney. He passed away on April 24, 2023, with his loved ones by his side in his home in rural Ava, at the age of 64 years, 9 months and 11 days.

Steve had a partner, Peggy, whom he spent the last 22 years of his life with and whom he cherished as a constant source of love, fun and support. They moved from Missouri to Alaska in 2003, which marked a pivotal point in Steve’s life.

In 2007, they returned to Missouri where they built their dream home in rural Douglas County and shared many priceless moments with their loved ones. Peggy and Steve traveled the world, enjoyed countless good times with family and their many friends, and built a beautiful life together. Peggy was Steve’s true north and played a major role in him becoming the best version of himself. Steve and Diane Porter were united in marriage in 1981, and together they welcomed three children, Travis, Dillon and Danielle Cheyney.

Steve was a proud father who deeply loved his children and grandchildren, Peggy, and his many friends. Steve found peace and happiness in the simplicity of nature and was grateful for the moments he felt fortunate to spend in the Ozarks. He had a sincere respect and appreciation for the outdoors and greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Steve worked at Rawlings in Ava, Hutchens in Mansfield, and worked in construction for many years. He enjoyed and excelled in sports early on in his life and enjoyed playing recreational sports with his coworkers and friends as a young adult.

Steve appreciated the beauty of simplicity and had many good times playing pool with his children and friends, traveling and experiencing the world, and sitting on his front porch with Peggy. Steve was an intelligent, curious, loving, and thoughtful man. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed learning and trying new things.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Dana (Lane) Cheyney.  He is survived by his partner, Peggy Cargin, of Ava; his children, Travis Cheyney and wife, Julie, of Ava; Dillon Cheyney and wife, Misty, of Ava; and Danielle Kelly and husband, Austin, of Springfield; his grandchildren, Kingston Cheyney, Hadley Cheyney, Josie Cheyney, Eli Cheyney and Harrison Kelly; as well as many friends.

Steve will be remembered by his family and friends as a man who was genuine, loyal, and true to his word. He lived life to the fullest and was always willing to lend a hand or share a laugh. His passing has left a void in the lives of those who loved him, but his memory will live on. He will be deeply missed.

A celebration of his life will be held on May 6, 2023, at 2 P.M. at the Top of the Ozarks Shooting Range, in Mansfield. Cremation was under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mansfield.
