Special Memorial Day event held in Hartville

Posted

In a Memorial Day ceremony that is probably unique in all of America, over 100 Wright County citizens read aloud the 195 names of Wright County Patriots who died in service to their country. The crowd met at the Wright County Patriots Memorial at the county courthouse.

Here each of the 195 names were respectfully spoken by the gathered citizens. Each name was followed by a chiming bell, rung by veteran Aaron Huffman.

Pastor Jack Dugger gave the invocation expressing his appreciation of our patriots and asking continued blessings on our country and guidance for its leadership. Mrs. Cheryl Brown, a Hartville School music teacher, gave voice to a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem.

Colonel Rocky Griffin, USAF (Ret.) presented the POW/MIA table, explaining the symbolism of each of the pieces on the table.

He noted that while reading the names of the dead patriots may not bring them to life, it keeps their sacrifices alive in their hearts and inspired us to remember that it was through these patriots, freedom lives.

A wreath was laid by members from the Mountain Grove VFW auxiliary, Nancy Smith; Tri-County Veterans auxiliary, Sherry Thompson; and Hartville American Legion Auxiliary, Shirley Dugger.

A second wreath was laid representing all Wright County Veterans by Darrell Cope, a World War II veteran, who was also celebrating his 96th birthday.

Tri-County Veterans and Hartville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars honor the American Flag by firing a 21-gun volley and raising of the flag back to full staff.

The Norwood Veterans Honor Guard contingent raised the flag to full staff.

The ceremony concluded with Levi Meadows, the Hartville High School Band director, playing a stirring rendition of TAPS.

It is our duty and honor to remember these fallen patriots and show thankfulness for the freedoms we still enjoy thanks to them paying the ultimate sacrifice.

And thanks to all of our veterans of the United States Armed Services.
