Roy Don Smith

Roy Don Smith, son of the late Frank and Oma Mae (Hankins) Smith, was born March 14, 1951, in Salem, and departed this life Nov. 23, 2020, in Cabool. He was 69 years, 8 months and 9 days of age. Roy graduated with the Mountain Grove High School Class of 1970. While still in high school, he began working for Eldon Duey at Duey’s Generator. He worked there until it closed and then began working at Decker Auto Electric. He worked there until health would no longer allow and forced him into retirement in 2011. Roy was united in marriage to Virginia Moore on Oct. 22, 1970. Three children were born to this union, Christina, Melissa and Keith. Roy enjoyed being outdoors especially when camping at Alley Springs. He also like going to Branson, and enjoyed sitting and watching cars there. Roy liked visiting with friends at the Saturday morning breakfast club in the Battlefield Mall in Springfield. He also enjoyed attending church at the First Free Will Baptist Church of Mountain Grove. His greatest passion was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Roy was preceded in death by two daughters, Christina Claxton and Melissa Mabe; and one brother-in-law, Harvey High. Roy is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Virginia Smith; son, Keith Smith and wife, Christina; six grandchildren, Jordyn Freeman and husband, Levi, Trey Dixson, Logan Dixson and wife, Emma, Dylan Claxton, Jaxson Smith and Layne Smith; one great-grandchild, Tucker Freeman; two sisters, Alma Jean High and Helen Carroll and husband, Chuck; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him greatly. Funeral Services for Roy Don Smith were held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020, in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with the Rev. Gary Fry officiating. Special songs were “Amazing Grace” and “Go Rest High On That Mountain.” Serving as pallbearers were Logan Dixson, Dylan Claxton, Levi Freeman and Keith Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Jaxson Smith, Layne Smith, Tucker Freeman and Trey Dixson. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery of Mountain Grove under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home.
