Norwood wins Consolations

Posted

The Norwood Lady Pirates softball team entered last weekend’s Pride Park Tournament in Bakersfield with just one victory.

Though they opened play by falling to Hartville for the second time in one week, the Lady Pirates recovered quickly from the tough loss by picking up two big victories to win the Consolation Championship.

Their first win in the tournament came against a Dora team that beat them in the season opener.

Norwood avenged that loss with a 6-5 win over the Lady Falcons. (No statistics were available at press time.)

After that win, Norwood used a five-run fifth inning to pull away from Alton, 7-2.

Autumn Gunter got the Lady Pirates’ bats going in that frame as she hit a two-run home run to center field.

She finished the game with two RBIs and one run scored. Kylee Bradshaw had one RBI and two runs scored; Cadence Jarrett and Cassie Chadwell each had one RBI and one run scored; Harley Finch had one RBI; and both Kinley Sinning and Caitlin Campbell scored one run.

On the mound, Chadwell tossed six innings and allowed two earned runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.

No statistics were made available by press time for the Lady Pirates’ 10-8 first round loss to Hartville.

Before the tournament, the Lady Pirates traveled to Van Buren last week and left with a tough 8-1 loss.

Their offense had just three hits as Finch, Bradshaw and Gunter each earned their way onto the base path.

Gunter had the lone RBI while Natalie Lawson scored the lone run.

On the mound, Chadwell tossed six innings and allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

(Norwood also lost to Hartville, 10-4. Information available in Hartville’s softball article.)
