Posted

Though Norwood had opened their year with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss days earlier to Hartville, they rallied two days later to win their home opener, 7-4, over Van Buren.

The Pirates scored four times in the bottom of the second inning and held on late for the win.

In their big inning, Brayden Wehrer scored on a wild pitch. Then Garrett Davault, Dylan Calhoun and Noah Drake each added RBI singles.

Cooper Vaughan led the Pirates with two hits, two RBIs and one run scored while both Drake and Calhoun had one RBI.

Meanwhile, Jacob Sinning, Toby Cottengim, Max McGowan and Dillion Bennett each scored one run.

Cottengim picked up the win on the mound after tossing six innings. He allowed one earned run on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Sinning tossed one inning of shutout ball and allowed two hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

They ended their week with a tough 3-2 loss to Galena. Galena led 3-1 through six innings when Norwood managed to close the gap in their final at-bat behind Drake’s RBI single. The Pirates had the bases loaded with two outs before a ground ball ended the threat.

Davault and Drake each had one RBI while Max McGowan scored twice in the loss. Sinning went four innings on the mound and allowed one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Calhoun tossed two innings and allowed one earned run on one hit with two strikeouts.
