Norwood JH Pirates win Strafford Tournament

The Norwood Junior High boys basketball team moved its record to an impressive 22-1 last Saturday after adding three more victories on their way to winning the Strafford Tournament title.

In the championship game against a larger school in Rogerville, the Pirates held on late for a 40-35 win.

Norwood led 21-19 at halftime and trailed by two at the end of the third quarter. The Pirates won the final frame, 13-6, to win the game by five points.

Peyton McDaris scored 14 points; Cooper Vaughan had 11; Noah Drake had seven; both Andrew Bradshaw and Hayden Finch had three points; while Gunner Bradshaw scored two points.

Two days earlier, the Pirates defeated another large school in Bolivar, 49-40. Norwood was up 25-17 at halftime before a big third quarter gave the Liberators a one point edge heading into the fourth.

There, Norwood outscored Bolivar, 18-8, to clinch a spot in the finals.

Drake had a team-high 22 points while McDaris scored 12 points. Cooper Vaughan had nine points, Carder Kelly had five points and Finch scored one point.

In the first round, Norwood jumped out to a 16-point lead in the first quarter and went on to defeat Clever, 51-32.

Drake finished with 22 points; McDaris had 15; Cooper Vaughan had seven; Kelly scored three points; and both Gunner Bradshaw and Finch had two points.
