Posted

With hopes of getting off to a good start during the fall 2021 season, the Mansfield Lions did so in a big way with a solid 5-3 victory over a good Billings program in their home opener.

In the match-up on Thursday, Sep. 2, the Lions used a five run second inning to pull away from the Wildcats.

After Billings opened the game with a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat, the Lions answered in the second.

One run scored on an error before Carter Brooke added an RBI single to tie the game.

Brayden Barnett then had a bases clearing double to score three runs.

Billings plated one run in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough to complete a comeback.

Brooke finished with two hits, one run scored and one RBI; Barnett had two hits and three RBIs; while Trevor Williams, Tanner Indendi and Ryin Long each scored one run.

The offense did finish the game with six hits while the Lions’ defense committed one error.

Barnett led the Lions on the mound by tossing five innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Kellar Davis closed the door with two solid innings of work.

Davis shutout the Wildcats and gave up just one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.
