Mansfield baseball knocks off Conway, Norwood

Posted

After extending their winning streak to five in a row last week, it’s safe to say that the Mansfield Lions baseball program is returning to its winning ways.

Two of their last three victories included wins over a 17-win Conway team last spring and a Norwood squad that was in the state quarterfinals just a few months ago.

Against the Bears, pitcher Brayden Barnett tossed a complete game gem as he went seven innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts.

Offensively, Mansfield led 5-0 after two innings before scoring at least one run in their final three at-bats to seal the 9-0 win behind a 10-hit attack.

Kellar Davis paced the Lions’ offense with three hits, one RBI and two runs scored while Barnett helped his own cause with three hits and two RBIs.

Carter Brooke had two hits, one RBI and three runs scored; both Kaden Coble and Jack Grubbs added one RBI; Brock Gray scored twice; while both Tanner Indendi and Trevor Williams scored one run.

Conway’s defense made seven errors in the loss.

In the match-up with rival Norwood, the Lions’ offense scored four runs in both the first and sixth innings to pick up a big 8-1 home victory.

Davis was stellar on the mound as he went seven innings and allowed one earned run on three hits with 10 strikeouts.

Madix Gray’s two-RBI single in the first inning helped to pace the Lions’ four-run first inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Grubb’s two-RBI single helped Mansfield seal the win.

Grubbs ended the game with three RBIs and one run scored while Madix Gray had two RBIs. Brooke scored twice; Barnett had one RBI and one run scored; Brock Gray and Brooke each scored two times; while Ryin Long and Williams scored one run.

Norwood’s offense had just three hits in the loss.

Brayden Wehrer had one RBI and Jacob Sinning scored the lone run.

On the mound, Sinning lasted five and a third innings and allowed five earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and five walks.

Toby Cottengim tossed two-thirds of an inning and allowed three earned runs on five hits with one walk.

The Lions ended their week by traveling to Fordland and escaping with a 7-6 win in spite of their defense making four errors.

Mansfield held a 6-1 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning when the Eagles scored two runs.

Up 7-3 in the seventh, Fordland had a late three-run rally fall short as Brooke struck out the final batter with runners on second and third and two outs.

The Lions’ offense was led by Barnett’s two RBIs and one run scored while Madix Gray had two RBIs.

Barnett scored twice; Brock Gray and Grubbs had one RBI and one run scored; Kaden Coble had an RBI; and both Carter Garrison and Ashton Pierson scored one run.

Dylan Robertson tossed five innings on the mound for the Lions and allowed three earned runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.
