The Norwood Lady Pirates basketball team provided new head coach Adam Hill his first career coaching victory last week when they defeated Summit Conference foe Gainesville in the Norwood Lady Pirate Invitational.

During the Consolation semifinals match-up, Norwood outscored Gainesville, 35-19, in the second half to pick up the big victory. The win already matches their win total from a season ago.

In the first half, neither team’s offense were able to get things going as the game was tied at 18-18 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Norwood was able to get to the free throw line. They scored seven of their 13 points from the charity stripe.

Up by just two points going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Pirates took over the game behind Loran Mooney’s 10 points and Cassie Chadwell’s seven points.

The Lady Pirates scored 22 points in the final frame to pull away for the win.

Mooney finished with 20 points, Chadwell had 16, Autumn Gunter had 10 points, Chloe Tinsley added five points and Cassie Wright had two points.

After picking up the big win, the Lady Pirates fell to Spokane in the Consolation finals, 52-34.

Norwood actually led 12-9 in the first quarter as Gunter, Wright and Chadwell each hit 3-pointers.

Unfortunately, the Lady Owls responded with four 3-pointers in the second quarter to take a 27-18 halftime lead.

Mooney had a solid second half, scoring 10 of her team-high 13 points, but it wasn’t enough in the loss. Chadwell scored 12 points, Gunter had six points and Wright had three points.

The Lady Pirates gave Hartville a hard time in their first round match-up before falling to the Lady Eagles, 37-27.

Norwood’s defense limited the Lady Eagles to just 13 first half points as they trailed by only two points at the break.

Unfortunately, turnovers played a factor as the Lady Pirates ended up losing the game late by 10 points.

In the loss, Mooney paced the Lady Pirates with 14 points. Chadwell had four points; Wright scored three points; both Gunter and Tinsley had two points; and Jarrett had one point.
