For the second time this season, the Mountain Grove Lady Panthers picked up a win over nearby Norwood. One week after beating the Lady Pirates in the Scallywag Invitational, Mountain Grove went to Norwood on Dec. 15 and left with a 33-22 victory.

The Lady Panthers led 11-6 at the end of the first quarter and were up 19-12 at halftime.

Neither team scored more than 10 points in the final two quarters, but the Lady Panthers held on for the win.

“It was a physical game, we were able to persevere and come out with a win,” said Mountain Grove head coach Vallie Hoerning.

Trinity Elliott led in scoring with 12 points, followed by Addy Welch with none points.

Reagan Hoerning, Macey Penner and Gracyi Keeling each contributed four points. Hoerning led in rebounding with eight, followed by Ashley Watson and Welch each with five rebounds. Penner had six deflections and three assists; Hoerning had four deflections and two steals; while Watson and Welch each had two steals.

Sierra Cornelison led the Lady Pirates with eight points. Keyera Cornelison had six points; both Cassie Chadwell and Cassie Wright scored three points; and Hailey Hall had two points.

Against Conway, Mountain Grove led by three at the end of the first quarter, but were unfortunately outscored 47-30 in the final three quarters before falling, 55-41.

“We were in control of the game for a little over a quarter, then we finished the two quarters with poor execution on breaking their press that resulted in multiple turnovers,” Hoerning said. “We were able to make good adjustments in the second half, played really hard the entire game, but just couldn’t overcome the first half deficit.  I was proud with how the girls competed.”

Hoerning led in points with 12 followed by Elliott’s nine points. Campbell Welch had seven points, Watson six points and Addy Welch five points. Watson led in rebounds with seven, Hoerning had six and Elliott had four. Defensively, Hoerning had four deflections and three steals, Keeling had three steals and Watson two steals.  Elliott and Addy Welch each had two deflections.

Hoerning, Watson and Campbell Welch each had two assists.
