Joy Angelina Mayfield

Joy Angelina Mayfield, daughter of the late Norman and Opal Smith Peterson, was born on Sep. 12, 1930, in Tarkio, and departed this life on Feb. 17, 2022, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, following an extended illness. She was 91 years of age. When she was very young, Joy moved with her family to Visalia, Calif. She lived there until she was 14 years old. They then moved to Harrisonville. She was married to Lewis O. Mayfield on Aug. 13, 1947, in Harrisonville. They later moved to Mountain Grove. Five children were born to this union. Joy was an accomplished seamstress, and she enjoyed making her own jewelry. She liked to have a large garden and she won awards for her canned goods. Music was a big part of her life, and she enjoyed singing. Joy also played several instruments. She was known to be an outstanding cook. She also enjoyed her beloved dog, Minnie, and her two coon cats. Joy was saved and baptized at a young age. She was a member of the Cornerstone Free Will Baptist Church. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Mayfield; an infant son, Donald Ray Mayfield; two daughters-in-law, Shona Mayfield and Debbie Mayfield; four grandchildren, Christopher, Teresa, Vonya and Louie; and by two brothers, Darrell Peterson and Wayne Peterson. She is survived by one daughter, Sharlene Bradley, of Mountain Grove; three sons, 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends, who will miss her very much.

Graveside services for Joy Mayfield were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022, at Willow Springs Cemetery in Mountain Grove. Edwin Carter officiated the service. Pallbearers were Andy Mayfield, Orland Mayfield, Luther Moore, Trenton Moore, Gabriel Culbert and Kaylee Culbert. Burial was in Willow Springs Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mountain Grove.
