John Dalzie Shores

Posted

John Dalzie Shores, son of the late Charles Everett and Eva (Richardson) Shores, was born Oct. 30, 1930, and passed away June 18, 2020, at his daughter’s home in Neosho. He was 89 years, 7 months and 19 days of age.

John grew up in the Norwood and Macomb communities. He married Shirley Mae Pennington on May 7, 1954, in Seymour. Three children were born to this union, John Jr., Tony and Sandy. John was the best mechanic in Mountain Grove.

If he couldn’t fix it, it couldn’t be fixed. He and Shirley were members of Southside Baptist Church and worked together in the church for many years. John was a Sunday School teacher and also drove the church bus. He and Shirley loved singing together and serving the Lord.

In his spare time, he liked to water ski, fish, spend time on the lake, travel, especially to Canada, and he also enjoyed spending time on the farm. To his children, he was the best dad ever. John and Shirley did everything together. You never saw one without the other.

Three weeks after Shirley passed away, John was in the hospital. While he was there, he told his children, “Your mom slipped away, and I’m going to go find her.”

Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Shirley, on Jan. 26, 2020, and seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by two sons, John Shores, Jr. (Tammy Watson), of Mountain Grove, and Tony Lee Shores, of Gainesville; one daughter, Sandy S. Smith (Dan), of Neosho; six grandchildren, Adam Shores, Phillip Shores (Channing), Sylas Shores, Lisa West (Eli), Shawna Hansen (Rorie) and Travis Anderson (Brandi); 11 great-grandchildren, Lauren, Alyssa, Kamden, Maelyn, Baylor, Patience, Steele, Tensley, Ava, Callen and Avenly; and many other relatives, friends and church family who will dearly miss him.

Visitation for John Shores was held Monday, June 22, 2020, from 6-8 p.m. at Craig-Hurtt funeral home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at 10 a.m. at Southside Baptist Church, Mountain Grove, with the Rev. Keith Adamson and the Rev. Johnny Atchison officiating.

Song selections were “When We All Get To Heaven,” “I’ve Got More To Go To Heaven For,” “What A Day That Will Be” and “We’re Together Again” sung by Ronnie Turner and Shirley Turner. Adam Shores, Phillip Shores, Sylas Shores, Rorie Hansen, Eli West and Dan Smith served as pallbearers.

Ivan Calhoun and Russ Kahler served as honorary pallbearers. Burial was in Retherford Cemetery, Norwood, under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mountain Grove. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons or Retherford Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
