Eugene Walker Young

Eugene Walker Young, son of Bonnie Walker Young and Miles Thomas Young, was born on April 24, 1924, and went to his heavenly home on June 16, 2021. He was 97 years, 1 month and 20 days old. He was residing at Autumn Oaks Caring Center at the time of his passing. Gene was a long-time business man in Mountain Grove. He was an American Family Insurance Agent for 40 years and also a letter carrier for USPS for 28 years. Gene met and married Zelma Booker shortly after graduating from high school. They had one son, Edward. He was an avid pool player and had several trophies he won over the years.  He also loved pitching horseshoes, gardening, and growing beautiful flowers in his spare time. Anyone who knew Gene knew he liked to tell jokes and probably remembered more than the usual person. He loved going to the Senior Center, as long as his health permitted. He and Zelma were members of the First Baptist Church in Mountain Grove. He was preceded in death by his wife, Zelma Young, and son, Edward Young.

He is survived by his favorite daughter-in-law, Linda Young, of Mountain Grove;,grandson, Kristopher Young and his wife, Letitia, of Springfield; four great-granddaughters; and five great-great grandchildren, who will miss him.  Visitation for Gene Young was held Monday, June 21, 2021, from 10-11 a.m. at Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home. Funeral services followed the visitation at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Ware officiating. Song selections were “Amazing Grace” and “I’ll Fly Away” sung by Ray Bradley. Duane Goforth, Charles Thomas, Sonny Walker, Leon Porter, Bob Murr and Ronnie Todd served as pallbearers. Kenneth Koontz and Monte Housley served as honorary pallbearers. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mountain Grove. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Grove Senior Center in care of the funeral home.
