DW Burnside, of Castle Rock, Colo., born to Duward P. and Gladys Burnside in Stanford, Ky., passed away on Jan. 18, 2022 after a short battle with lung cancer and COPD. A loving and caring husband to Helen for 48 years, they spent much time traveling the U.S. thanks to his career with General Motors Acceptance Corporation. Retiring after 30 years of service, DW assumed his favorite role, being "Papa" to his seven grandchildren. DW also enjoyed the South Suburban Retirees Golf League outings and socializing with his former GMAC colleagues. He and Helen spent bonus time at their Cabool home away from home where DW spent long hours fishing, and both enjoyed their occasional golf outings with friends. The Cabool home was a vacationing destination for friends and family to enjoy together. DW was preceded by his parents, Duward and Gladys Burnside, of Cabool, and his sister, Billy Sue Gordon, of Batesville, Ark. He is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Michael Hayes, of Beulah, Colo.; daughter, Beverly Burnside, of Madison, Miss.; daughter, Lori Hayes (Cory) Hatch, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and son, Bruce Burnside, of Byram, Miss.

DW was a proud grandparent to Lauren, Ryan and Krista Hatch, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Julia (Brandon) Ladd, of Philadelphia, Miss.; Perry and Layne Burnside, of Springfield/Raymond, Ill.; and Gage Jaramillo, of Beulah, Colo. Family and friends met at St. Andrew UMC's Chapel, 9203 S. University Blvd., Highlands Ranch, Colo. 80126, Saturday Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. service, followed by a reception in the West Gathering Space at 2 p.m. (In retirement, DW's manner of dress went from suit and tie to plaid flannel shirts and denim. Guys celebrated him by wearing their favorite flannel shirt and jeans; same as the family.) Cremation Society of Colorado: DW's desire was that his ashes be spread in the Piney River near Cabool, spring 2022. Details will be shared later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew United Methodist Church 9203 S. University Blvd., Highlands Ranch, CO 80126 or Porter Hospice Residence 5020 E. Arapahoe Rd., Centennial, CO 80122.
