Dorine (Thornhill) Peterson

Dorine (Thornhill) Peterson was born on a farm north of Mountain Grove on March 2, 1925, to Ada (Long) and George W. Thornhill. She departed this life Feb. 24, 2022, at Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mountain Grove at almost 97 years of age.

Dorine graduated from Mountain Grove High School in 1943. She married “P.J.” Pritchard Peterson on Jan. 30, 1943. One son was born to this union.

She was employed at Brown Shoe Company for over 30 years before retiring to voluntarily serve with “Meals On Wheels.”

Dorine loved and immensely enjoyed her children, especially her two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She faithfully taught young children’s Sunday School classes for 60 years. She attributes her longevity (96 years and 361 days) to the special relationships she had with her children and grandchildren. They greatly enriched her exemplary life. Dorine was saved and baptized at an early age. She joined the Church of the Brethren in 1943 and for 80 years, faithfully served her Lord and Savior as Sunday School teacher, Deacon’s wife and active church member.

Dorine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, P.J., on Aug. 28, 2006; an infant great-granddaughter; two brothers; and five sisters.

She is survived by her son, Ed Peterson (Bonnie); two grandchildren, Marcie Stumpff (Greg) and Deborah Gaddis (Rick); three great-grandchildren, Charlotte Yarger (Nathan), Zach Stumpff (Tiffanie) and Anthony Peterson; six great-great-grandchildren, Eden and Ember Stumpff, Gabby, Zander, Gage and Summer Yarger; a sister, Nola Faye Atchison; two sisters-in-law, Mary Peterson and Eldora Wood; a brother-in-law, Richard Peterson (Nina); along with a large number of nieces and nephews and her church family.

Visitation for Dorine Peterson was held Tuesday, March 1, 2022 from 9-10 a.m. at Christian Brethren Fellowship in Mountain Grove.

Funeral services followed the visitation at 10 a.m., also at the church, with Brother Mike Benson officiating.  Congregational song selection was “Amazing Grace.” Special songs sung by the Christian Brethren Fellowship Choir were “I Bowed On My Knees And Cried Holy” and “Beulah Land” led by Charlotte Yarger with Laura Peterson serving as pianist and Debby Gilley serving as harmonicist.

Anthony Peterson, Zach Stumpff, Nathan Yarger, Rick Gaddis, Greg Stumpff and Paul Peterson served as pallbearers. Richard Peterson, Gary Peterson and Kenny Littrell served as honorary pallbearers.

Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mountain Grove. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research. Online condolences: www.craighurttfuneralhome.com.
