Donald Lee Mayfield

Donald Lee Mayfield, 82, of Stilwell, Kan., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2020, at the Advent Shawnee Mission Hospital in Overland Park, Kan. Don was born Aug. 30, 1937 to Francis and Effie (Barnett) Mayfield, of Mountain Grove. As a young man, Don worked various jobs in Mountain Grove ranging from gas station attendant to antenna installer. He left Mountain Grove and moved to Olathe, Kan. in 1959 after meeting a special young lady in a skating rink, Sandy Rust. Don and Sandy were married almost 60 years. Don worked as a supervisor in the woodworking industry for 40 years. He retired in 2007 to enjoy his many hobbies such as camping, boating and deep sea fishing. He and his wife, Sandy, traveled to all 50 states and many countries including Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and the Caribbean. Don brought the art of horse trading to Johnson County, Kan. He loved to wheel and deal with the best of them whether it involved boats, trailers, cars and even houses. Don enjoyed his retirement especially seeing his four great-grand daughters and all of his family. Through the years, Don and Sandy made many friends who became just like family to them. Don was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Terry, Ronnie and Randy Mayfield. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, of the home; son, Marty, of West Plains; sisters, Betty (Jim) Grubbs, of Loveland, Colo.; Debbie (Robin) Hoffschneider, also of Loveland, Colo.; Mary Baney, of Mountain Grove; Lorene (Merle) Bidwell, of Ava; Glenda Kelley, of Norwood; and Anna Sein, of Mountain Grove; along with a brother, Lonnie (Joni) Mayfield, of Norwood. Don was blessed with two grandsons, Corey and Troy (Sarah) Mayfield, of Springfield; along with four great-granddaughters, Myah, Madi, Olivia and Marlena.

Visitation for Don Mayfield was held Monday, Aug. 17, 2020, from 12:30–1:30 p.m. at Craig Hurtt Funeral Home. A graveside service followed the visitation at 2 p.m. at Friendship Cemetery, Mountain Grove, with the Lane Roberts officiating. Song selection were “Green, Green Grass of Home,” “Wings Of A Dove” and “Amazing Grace.”  Corey Mayfield, Troy Mayfield, Lane Roberts, Francis Kelley, Jim Grubbs and Bill Thomas served as pallbearers. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mountain Grove.  Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
