Davault signs with Evangel

With his senior basketball season just around the corner, Norwood’s Garrett Davault was grateful to officially sign his letter of intent last week to publicly declare where he will be continuing his career on the collegiate level.

Davault was joined by his parents, coaches and friends last Wednesday when he officially chose Evangel University as his college basketball destination.

“I really think I had to get this out of the way,” said Davault, who is entering his senior year with many returning players from a Pirates’ squad that took third place at state a year ago. “(Evangel) was the closest school and I had them in the back of my mind the whole time…Now I can focus on this season and work hard to make another Final Four year like last year.”

Evangel University head coach Bert Capel, who was hired to replace the retiring Steve Jenkins, said he first watched Davault during the state tournament last season.

“I kind of fell in love with him,” Capel said. “Then I got to know him and found out he was a great kid, he had a great family, he plays hard and he works hard. It was a no-brainer. He fits everything we’re about at Evangel.”

Norwood head coach Shane Chadwell said Davault is the first player in his near decade-long tenure to sign a letter of intent to continue their career after high school.

“He’s one of the top players to come through here,” Chadwell said.

Chadwell added that Davault can now focus on his senior season. He also noted that he was thankful Davault’s college choice was close to home, allowing him to go see the eventual Norwood graduate when he competes on the collegiate level.
