Catherine Lynne (McGregor) Wright, 65, of Mountain Grove, passed away peacefully on Nov. 11, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family at Cox South Hospital in Springfield. Cathy lived a remarkable life filled with love, hard work and adventure. Cathy’s culinary skills were legendary in the family, but they had rather humble, and unconventional, beginnings. As a child, Cathy honed her talents in her grandmother Catherine Jameson’s kitchen, where she was tasked with basting the Sunday roast. Times were tough, and the roast had to stretch into meals for the entire week, making it a prized centerpiece of their family table. While living in Ellendale, N.D., with her mother, Wanda, Aunt Lynne, Uncle David and her grandmother, Cathy took her kitchen duties seriously. One fateful afternoon, while her grandmother napped, young Cathy decided the roast needed a little extra attention. Armed with a bottle of Prell shampoo, she meticulously basted the meat, believing it was the secret ingredient for perfection. The family worked tirelessly to scrub the roast clean, but despite their best efforts, dinner that evening still had a faint soapy undertone. Cathy’s creativity in the kitchen extended beyond the stove. When her little brother, Vincent, became too aggravating one day, she turned to a rather unconventional use of raw chicken fat as a silencing mechanism. Needless to say, Cathy was not one to be trifled with! Though these early kitchen escapades became the stuff of family legend, they also set the stage for Cathy’s lifelong love of food and family gatherings. Her humor, resourcefulness, and no-nonsense approach were as much a part of her cooking as the ingredients she used. Cathy’s meals, sans Prell, of course, became staples of comfort and love for those lucky enough to share her table. Cathy was a woman who believed in the beauty of a full and vibrant life. She loved deeply, laughed often, knew no stranger and bopped to her own beat. Cathy was born in San Francisco, Calif., spent time in North Dakota, Wyoming and finally Missouri, where her mom, Wanda(Jameson), and dad, Gerald, bought a dairy farm in Thornfield, where she developed the work ethic that guided her throughout her life. Over the years, she worked in agriculture, manufacturing, health care, and food service, retiring from Copeland in Ava in 2019.
Cathy married the love of her life, Robert Wright, on July 6, 1978, in Theodosia. Their devotion to one another carried them through countless adventures, from raising chickens in Decatur, Ark., to trucking across the country. She spent her life rooted in the Ozarks, where she built a family that would come to span generations. Her proudest legacy is her family. She is survived by her children, Gerald Robert Wright and Catherine (Savanna) Belle Rae, and stepsons Michael (Terri) Dale Wright and the late Robert (Angela) Claire Wright. Her most cherished titles were "Ganny" and "Granny," blessings she wore with pride as she adored her 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, who brought her endless joy. Cathy was a wonderful daughter, aunt, sister, wife, mother and friend to many. Cathy is also survived by her siblings, Valerie (Nigel) Dawson, Dawn (Tim) Bowers, and Vincent McGregor, all of Lincoln, Ark. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Wanda McGregor; her stepson, Rob Wright; her favorite son-in-law, Darrin Hawkins; and her best friend, June Brazeal. Cathy’s life was a tapestry of creativity, resilience and humor. She loved quilting, crafting heirlooms her family will cherish forever, and gardening, which brought her peace and connection to nature. Cathy was known for her adventurous spirit and her unique sense of humor. She often dreamed of raising alpacas and running freely on the farm, and she never hesitated to enjoy a cold beer or a little weed. Cathy’s life was a celebration of love, laughter, and authenticity. Her family will forever remember her devotion, her creative talents, and the joy she brought to every room she entered. A family directed Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024 at First Day Church, Cabool. In her honor, raise a toast, plant a flower, or wrap yourself in a quilt and remember the warmth of her love.
