Norwood Pirates open season with two wins

The Norwood Pirates’ basketball team started their season 2-0 after outscoring two opponents, 141-62.
Just before Thanksgiving, they hosted a Billings Wildcats’ team that came off a solid win against Monett in their season opener. The Pirates would use a 17-5 third quarter run to pull away with a 59-40 victory.
Carder Kelly came up big in the first quarter scoring 10 of his team’s 18 points.
He added another seven points in the second quarter as the Pirates led 33-28 at the break.
In the big third quarter, Laken Coatney, Pierce Lawson and Kelly each scored four points. Hunner Finch added a 3-pointer in the frame.
In the fourth quarter, Kelly scored five points to help seal the 19-point win.
Kelly finished with 26 points; Lawson scored 10 points; Coatney had eight points; Remington Hill, Andrew Bradshaw and Carson Vaughan scored four points; while Finch had three points.
In the season opener against Dora, the Pirates’ defense held the Falcons to seven points or less in all four quarters to pull away for an 82-22 victory.
Lawson made a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 of his team’s 31 points in the opening frame. Kelly added eight points as Norwood led 31-4.
Kelly had six points and Finch added four in a 23-point second quarter to go up 54-8 at halftime.
Finch scored seven points and Brady Vaughan had six in the third quarter to help Norwood pull away for the 60-point win.
The Pirates made six 3-pointers in the win.
Kelly led Norwood with 16 points; Finch had 15; both Brady Vaughan and Lawson had 12; Coatney scored eight points; both Hill and Andrew Bradshaw had five points; Chayton Bagnall had four points; Drae Bradshaw had three points; while Carson Vaughan scored two points.
