The Norwood Lady Pirates’ basketball team after winning the prestigious St. James Inviational championship with a win over Fatima last Friday evening.
The third time was a charm for the Norwood Lady Pirates’ basketball team as they won the St. James Invitational championship on Friday night with a 52-49 win over Fatima.
In their first year playing in the tournament, the Lady Pirates were third before finishing in second a year ago.
“(This is) the only tournament this senior bunch hasn’t gotten hardware…,” said Norwood head coach Wayne Jessen. “It’s a tough tournament and it seems to set the tone of how we’re going to play the rest of the season.”
Norwood trailed at the end of the first quarter by one before rallying just before halftime with the help of two Addy Gray 3-pointers and six points from Kalie Chadwell.
The Lady Pirates took a 30-25 lead into halftime.
Gray added another six points in the third quarter to maintain a six-point edge.
In the fourth quarter, Chadwell scored six of her team’s 12 points as the Lady Pirates held on for the three-point victory.
Chadwell was named the tournament MVP after scoring 19 points for Norwood.
Gray added 13; Gentry Davault had 10; Jayden Chambers, another All-Tournament selection, scored six points; Jaycee Hall had three points; and Lydia Harden scored one point.
The championship game was postponed one week due to the weather. Norwood defeated Gateway Legacy, 64-28, and beat Class 6 Waynesville, 39-37, in the first two rounds.
