Lady Pirates defeat Mansfield
It was a Wright County battle last week when the Norwood Lady Pirates’ basketball team hosted a Mansfield Lady Lions’ squad that won six of its previous eight games.
A big first half would help the Lady Pirates defeat their fellow Summit Conference foe, 53-42.
In the first quarter, Kalie Chadwell scored five of her team’s 13 points.
Cali Lemons answered with six points for the Lady Lions, though her team was down by three entering the second quarter.
Lemons made 5-of-6 free throws before halftime, but Norwood would pull ahead with the help of Quinncy Vestal’s five points.
Jayden Chambers, Gentry Davault and Autumn Gunter each scored four points in a 17-point frame to help Norwood take a 30-21 halftime lead.
Davault scored four of the Lady Pirates’ nine points in the third to push the edge to 12 points heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Addie Jones tried to rally the Lady Lions with seven points in the fourth. Norwood responded though by making all 10 free throw attempts to seal the 11-point win.
Davault led the Lady Pirates with 12 points; Vestal had nine; both Addy Gray and Gunter scored eight points; Chadwell had seven points; Chambers scored six; and Jaycee Hall had three points.
Lemons led the Lady Lions with 14 points; Jones had 13 points; Haven Tripp scored six points; Elly Williams had five points; and Kayley Kingery scored four points.
Three days later, Norwood traveled to Dora and left with a dominating 70-39 victory.
A 20-point second quarter was sparked by Gunter, who made two 3-pointers and scored 13 points for a 34-17 halftime lead.
Chadwell added two 3-pointers and scored 10 points in a 22-point third quarter to help Norwood pull away for good.
Gunter finished with 19 points; Chadwell added 17 points; Gray made three 3-pointers for 15 points; Chambers added seven; Davault had four points; and both Vestal and Hall had three points.
