Voters asked to look at initiative petitions with Amendment 6 vote
Voters heading to precincts on Tuesday, Nov. 3 will be asked to vote on Amendment 6, an item that is focused on initiative petitions.
A “Yes” vote will prohibit elected officials from directly amending or changing any law enacted through the initiative process.
Additionally, approval prohibits legislature from passing laws similar to those rejected by a referendum without approval of at least 80% of both the State House of Representatives and State Senate.
The “Yes” vote also maintains current signature requirements and constitutional amendment propositions.
It also preserves the existing majority votes being cast on a measure to be sufficient in enacting any law or constitutional amendment.
A “Yes” vote also allows courts to revise ballot summaries through lawsuits.
The ballot states that state and local government entities estimate no costs or savings with a “Yes” vote.
The Missouri Retired Teachers Association is actively encouraging a “Yes” vote with the goal of protecting the voice of all Missourians.
The Missouri Democrat Party encourages a “Yes” vote.
Voters casting a “No” vote will keep the current constitutional provisions that already give citizens a right to propose initiatives and referendum. The Missouri Farm Bureau is encouraging a “No” vote and so is the Missouri Republican Party on Amendment 6.
