The 28th Annual Kathy Smith Memorial St. Jude Benefit Trail Ride and Auction was held Saturday, Sep. 27, at the ranch of Ernie and Kim Ehlers north of Mountain Grove. There were 89 riders and about 150 community members who raised over $34,000 for St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., where no patient is ever charged for the life-saving treatments received.
The horseback ride was six miles of scenic trails extending over the properties of Ehlers, Elton and Vallie Hoerning, and Dixie Gaddis. Once back at camp, participants and attendees were treated to a barbecue/potluck meal served by Holy Cross Lutheran Church members and Anna Stigall, lots of door prizes, and a silent and live auction of donated items from area businesses and supporters.
Oldest and youngest riders were again recognized by RaMona Andrus. They were Julia Leatherwood, 91, of West Plains, and Harper Johnston, 13 months, of Mountain Grove. The 28th saddle was purchased by RaMona Andrus, of Cabool. The family and friends of the late Kathy Smith, a local youth and horse enthusiast, along with the children of St. Jude Children’s Hospital thank everyone who participated in any way, including event photographer Kaitlyn VanCleave, making this annual event so successful.  Photos can be found on our Facebook page:  Kathy Smith Memorial Trail Ride and Auction.
In the 28 years of this saddle-up fundraiser, more than $319,600 has been raised for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Please plan to attend next year’s event in late September.
