Hughes takes third in Class 1 state golf

Hartville’s Jace Hughes, right, with his third place state medal and head coach Emily McDaris.

Hartville’s Jace Hughes saved his best round of the season for the first round at last week’s Class 1 State Championships held at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield.
Hughes opened day one with a birdie and finished his solid day with a 75, just one stroke behind the leader.
On day two, Hughes did lose a ball on one hole, but he rallied with a par on the next hole to keep his position. He would go on to shoot a 75 for a two-day score of 154. This earned him a third place finish at state.
“Yeah, I am super proud of him,” said Hartville head golf coach Emily McDaris. “This is my fourth year in a row going, and as always, the state championship is a great experience. We were paired with nice kids, positive parents and coaches. It’s fun when you’re in the top pairing and all the spectators are cheering (quietly, it is golf!) for all the athletes.”
