Norwood Pirates open season with win over Hartville
When the Norwood Pirates’ baseball team hosted Hartville on Sep. 10, they were playing their first game of the fall 2024 season while the Eagles entered the contest with a 4-1 record.
The situation did not appear to shake the Pirates as they scored two runs in the second and fourth innings before holding on late for a 6-1 victory behind a 10-hit attack.
Pirates’ pitcher Cooper Vaughan shut down the Eagles’ bats as he tossed six scoreless innings of work and gave up five hits with three strikeouts.
In the lead-off spot, Laken Coatney had two hits and three RBIs; Cooper Vaughan added one RBI and one run scored; Brock Vaughan had one RBI; Noah Drake scored twice; while CJ. Saladin, Holten Lopez and Pete McCune each scored one run.
Hartville’s Hunter Walker had his team’s lone RBI while Brodyn Hulsey scored the only run.
On the mound, Hunter Lowery tossed four innings and gave up six earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Gavin Stigall tossed a scoreless inning and gave up no hits with one walk.
Two days later, the Pirates traveled to Van Buren and fell, 4-3. (No statistics were made available by press time.)
