Hostage incident leads to six-year sentence

On July 3, at approximately 10:39 p.m., deputies with the Wright County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported hostage situation at a residence north of Mountain Grove. The investigation determined that Daniel Mack, 28, of Miamiville, Ohio, had traveled to Missouri and confronted multiple victims while armed with a revolver. During the incident, Mack assaulted one victim with the firearm, restrained him with handcuffs, and forcibly transported him in a vehicle before releasing him in the Cabool area. Another victim fled into the woods because he feared for his life.
Investigators determined Mack had been surveilling the victims prior to the incident. He was subsequently apprehended in Butler County by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. At the time of his arrest, Mack was in possession of a revolver and handcuffs.
Following the investigation, Chief Deputy Kristi Akers submitted a probable cause affidavit supporting charges of kidnapping in the first degree, domestic assault in the first degree, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.
Case Disposition
On Aug. 19, Daniel Mack entered an Alford plea to second degree kidnapping and second degree assault. He was sentenced to six years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize the many individuals and agencies whose efforts contributed to the successful resolution of this case.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office, members of the Wright County Special Operations Group, Cabool Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted during the response and investigation. “I especially want to recognize the deputies and detention staff who worked this case,” said Wright County Sheriff B.J. Adler. “During Mack’s time in the Wright County Jail, he required numerous hours of additional staff time, supervision and intervention beyond the normal demands of operating our jail. Much of that work happens outside the public eye. I appreciate our staff for continuing to handle these circumstances professionally while maintaining the safety and security of our facility. I also want to thank Ozark County Sheriff Martin and Phelps County Sheriff Kirn for extending their facilities and resources to assist Wright County during this matter. The willingness of neighboring sheriffs to step up and help when needed is a tremendous asset to our office and our community. Cases like this require cooperation, professionalism, and a tremendous amount of work from people both inside and outside the public eye. I am proud of the men and women of the Wright County Sheriff’s Office and grateful to all of our law enforcement and judicial partners who helped bring this matter to a conclusion.”
